Beauty = All Sizes
So, this is a poetry blog. However, I'm feeling the need for a rant.
I was being fitted for a costume today. I am going to be a silent bar patron in my school's upcoming production of "Picasso at the Lapin Agile." (Plug for anyone living near the Simsbury area: GO! IT WILL BE AN EXCELLENT SHOW! AND YOU WILL SEE ME WALK ONSTAGE, TAKE A SHOT, AND WALK OFF!!!!)
All of the costumes were crazy long and didn't show much skin, as the play takes place in 1904. As I was having a countless number of dresses and skirts thrown my way, the girl who was in charge of costume kept making note of how I'm not tiny, and how the costumes are for tiny people. The costumes on hand were not her fault... but I came to a bit of a realization.
I'm not fat, okay? I've had countless body image issues and many problems stemming from those issues. But now, I'm strong enough to be able to say I AM NOT FAT. I AM NORMAL SIZED. People bigger than me aren't fat either. If my school's costume department only has clothes that fit girls who are the size of my wrist, that's not okay.
Those super tiny girls are beautiful. I'm not trying to diminish their beauty in any way. But our costumes should fit ALL women, no matter the size. We should have plus-sized clothing and petite clothing, as well as everything in between. Obviously, nothing is perfect. But this needs to be changed.
